ABOUT THE INSTITUTE FOR THERAPEUTIC MASSAGE
(ITM)
The Institute for Therapeutic
Massage, the producer of the Hot Stone Massage video and purveyor of
instructional packages, basalt massage stones, therapy supplies and
equipment, was founded in 1994. The school, which is COMTA approved,
and has six locations throughout New Jersey, is owned and operated
by massage therapists. Along with their 620 hour NJ state approved massage therapy program
, ITM offers an extensive
array of continuing education and professional development
courses. |
Hot Stone
Massage uses
heat and basalt stones to create a relaxing, gentle and effective
full body treatment that your client has never experienced before,
and will keep them coming back. It is no secret that the use of
thermalism, which in this case is the application of hot and cold stones,
is quickly becoming one of the most popular services in spas and salons
around the world.
Each set of basalt stones is handpicked from our
sources in Mexico, Chile & Peru, power cleaned, and then sorted based
on size and weight. We do not use machines to tumble or apply harsh
chemicals on the stones. We then have a massage therapist configure
the stone sets based on optimal size, shape and weight, package and label
the stones, and include a 55 minute instructional video and 18 page users
manual so that you can get started immediately.
We are proud to have recently evaluated the video's
from Nature's Stones Inc. (NSI) and have found them to be one of the
highest quality videos on the market, and include them in our specialty
sets. While our video provides a fine introduction into the art of
hot stone massage, Pat Mayrhofer, and her team at NSI takes it to a new
level, by incorporating her own style, essential oils, and some of her
patented products to give the client a complete experience. We also
carry her specialty videos on Hot Stone Facials, Manicures /
Pedicures, Reflexology, and now, Cool Lift Face Rejuvenation, which
uses both heated basalt stones with cold marble stones to generate a
non-invasive face lift like effect.
If you are just learning the
art of Hot Stone Massage, or are looking to pick up a CE Certificate while
learning a new skill, then our video and continuing education package is
perfect for you. If you have experience with hot stones, then Pat's
video will help broaden your skill set and incorporate some new
techniques.
Institute for Therapeutic Massage (ITM), with 6 massage therapy schools in the New Jersey,
specializes in medical and hospital based massage therapy programs,
Eastern philosophies and Shiatsu, as well as Personal Training. They
also offer over 30 Continuing Education classes, and advanced on-site
training for spa personnel. In conjunction with ITM, we are pleased
to offer these professional training videos, hot stone sets and
accessories at discount and wholesale prices so that more therapists have
the ability to integrate hot stones into their treatments and enhance
their practice.

BASALT STONES BEFORE & AFTER
BEING OILED OR 'SEASONED'
Frequently
Asked Questions (FAQs)
How
much is shipping?
For U.S. orders, shipping
of the hot stones and spa pro heaters is handled primarily via UPS
Ground, and sometimes USPS - the latter usually being
sent via priority mail. All orders, including the stone
warmers have a fixed shipping cost that is listed as you make your
way through the checkout process using credit card, and in the opening
window if you are using Paypal - you will not have to make a purchase in
order to get these costs. Shipping charges are calculated based on
the size and weight of the package, and therefore vary on each
item. It must also be noted that the stones and heaters must ship in
separate boxes to protect the warmer from damage - the rocks are quite
heavy. If the shipping costs more than we stated, we will pay the
difference, not you - no surprise charges or outrageous shipping fees
added on once you have invested your time researching the
products. If you request expedited shipping, there may be an
additional fee to pay.
Can I
take a class in Hot Stone Massage?
The
Institute for Therapeutic Massage does offer classes in Hot Stone Massage,
Hot Stone Pedicure and Manicure, Hot Stone Reflexology, and Hot Stone
Meridian Therapy, in and around New Jersey. For more information on these
classes, please visit ITM's section on Massage Therapy
Continuing Education in NJ . For
areas that ITM does not serve, and you are interested in having Pat
Mayrhofer and her team teach a class in Hot Stone Facials,
Pedicures & Manicures, or Reflexology, please visit her site.
How
do hot stones work?
The application of warm, or
heated basalt stones, also known as Mexican Beach Pebbles, helps to warm
the muscles while allowing practitioners to access deeper tissues more
quickly than with conventional massage. This also serves to save
their fingers from repetition and pressure oriented injuries.
What
kind of hot stone heater do you sell?
In our massage
therapy schools, we use Spa Pro Heaters by Nesco. It is because of
this reason, and our experience with the quality and usability of this
product, that we decided to offer it to the buying public. This
heater was designed with the assistance of a massage therapist, and hot
stone educator, to the specifications that would best serve the intended
purpose of heating stones when learning and
practicing massage. The temperature range should be maintained
between 120-130 degrees, but is greatly dependent upon your clients
sensitivity. Also, as water evaporates, the amount
that remains becomes hotter. Because of this variation, we
include an accessory kit with each set of stones that are purchased with a
hot stone warmer. The set has a slotted scoop, toe stone net bag,
fish net, and thermometer, which is an invaluable safety measure to employ
when maintaining a safe operating temperature. You do not have to
wear rubber gloves when using hot stones, as this is a massage tool that
is going to be placed against your clients skin - if you need gloves to
protect yourself from the water or heat, then something is not
right! Beware of companies that try to tell you differently..
Do I
have to be a massage therapist to buy this
video?
The Hot Stone Massage video is
designed specifically for people who have had professional training in
massage therapy, and assumes a knowledge of basic massage techniques,
anatomy, and medical contraindications.
Why
are your sets more expensive than some companies, and less than
others? Why should I buy from you vs. TIR Massage Stone, Thstone or
Massage Warehouse?
As a school, we have done a
lot of research on what other companies sell to make sure we are not only
supplying our customers with the products that they need, but also at
a price that is reasonable. Our focus, is on providing quality
stones; sorted for size, shape and smoothness. We then have our
massage therapists approve each set for usability. We treat each
client like they are our only client, take the time to make sure that each
order is done to your specifications, are available to speak with you at
any time, and pride our self on our responsiveness and customer
service.
As with anything else, some supply companies are
good, and some are not. A trend that we have noticed is that you get
what you pay for, particularly when buying an inexpensive set, and in
other circumstances you pay for their huge advertising budgets. Stone
sets that are very inexpensive don't have the quality rocks that you
would want, and probably come from landscape supply yards. Sets that
are very expensive tend to be sold by companies that put a lot
of money into their internet advertising, brochures, and trade show
appearances. If you see these companies everywhere on the internet,
that price is built into their stones. After a certain point, paying
more does not equal a better product. We do little internet
advertising, have no brochures, and do not attend trade shows; our
business is providing education, and high quality massage therapy
products, equipment, and supplies that support
that.
Another marketing myth perpetrated by numerous
companies is that all hot stones should be perfectly round and only the
deepest, darkest black. As the body is not a perfectly round shape,
and possesses numerous contours and angles, the rocks should reflect
this in their size and shapes as well. A good working tool will have
angles and oblong curves to allow the therapist to access hard to reach
muscles. Also, basalt stones are not black at all, but more of a
dark gray (see the picture above). They come in numerous colors
depending on their mineral content; yet their ability to hold and emanate
both heat and cold doesn't change.
Do
you carry other Massage Video or DVD programs?
Yes, we
do. First and foremost, we are an education company that also
provides the materials and supplies that a massage therapist would need to
perform certain modalities. Just as we looked far and wide for
companies to work with in bringing you quality stones to be used in
massage, we also look for content experts to provide you great educational
opportunities.
With this in mind, we are pleased to
announce our first partnership with Ralph Stephens Seminars. He is
truly a master of the art & science of massage therapy, and is
particularly known for his expertise in Medical, Chair and Sports
Massage. Of course, we offer this to you at discount pricing, as per
our normal way of doing business. If your interest falls outside of the
realm of hot stone massage, then we recommend you look at our sister site:
Massage & Spa Education Source
Can I
return my items?
You can return your items
if they are unopened. Our stones are packaged in bags to protect them
during shipping, and to also keep them contamination free. If these
bags are opened, they will not be accepted. To return the items, you
are financially responsible for shipping them back to us (please call for
an address), and the refund will be less the initial shipping cost plus a
restocking fee of 20% for the order. If, for some reason, your video
arrives damaged, it will be replaced. All of the rocks we sell are
natural, volcanic basalt stones, with all the variation that nature can
provide; including shape and color, as well as natural folds and texture.
These variations, however, will not be felt by your client during their
massage. We have massage therapists hand-pick the massage stones to
be sure that you do not receive any with cracks or sharp
edges. If, by any chance, you receive cracked basalt stones,
or rocks with sharp edges, they will be replaced free of
charge. Returns for natural variations in the stone will not be
accepted.
